None of this makes a drawing less useful. A drawing and a prototype answer different questions, and a programme generally needs both — the document to define what is intended, the physical piece to show what that intention becomes.

A programme answers the questions its product raises. A dining table and an upholstered chair do not arrive with the same list, and neither is assessed against the other's.
03What it is for
A prototype is not a small production run.
It is not the first units of an order and it is not a test of whether the factory can make the product. It exists to put decisions in front of people while changing them is still cheap.
The value of a prototype is not that it looks finished. It is that it makes unresolved decisions visible.
What a prototype puts in front of a decision
Confirmation
Decisions that were right, and can now be treated as settled rather than assumed.
Adjustment
Decisions that were close, and need a change before production is treated as resolved.
Acceptance
Decisions that are a trade-off rather than an error, and are agreed knowingly instead of discovered later.
Not every programme prototypes the same way, and not every product raises the same number of open questions. What a prototype is worth on a given programme depends on how much of the product is still genuinely undecided.
04Two words
Prototype and sample describe the same object at different moments.
In practice, furniture buyers use the two words interchangeably, and there is no industry definition that separates them. What follows is how they are used on this page, so the rest of it reads clearly.
- Prototype
- The physical piece while it is still being used to resolve the product — where something about the design, construction, material or execution is genuinely open.
- Sample
- The physical piece when it is being assessed against a more established product and programme specification, rather than used to settle what that specification should be.
This is working language rather than a standard. The same physical piece often moves from one to the other during a programme, and nothing depends on which word a buyer uses for it.

The physical questions are not the same for every product.
What a prototype has to answer is set by what the product is. These are the questions each category tends to raise physically — the manufacturing argument behind each one belongs to its own page.

Lounge chairs, case goods and other supported formats raise their own combinations. Which questions a prototype has to answer is agreed with the programme rather than assigned by category in advance.
06Material & finish
A material name does not describe how several materials read together.
A specification can name every material on a product correctly and still leave the most visible decision open, because what a buyer eventually judges is the combination — how these materials look beside each other, in this light, on this object.
Colour
How the agreed colour reads at product scale rather than on a swatch, and against everything else on the piece.
Texture
What the surface is like to touch and to see at close range, which a specification names but does not convey.
Sheen
How much light the finish returns, and whether two finishes specified separately agree when they meet.
Edge treatment
How an edge is finished, and how it reads where the eye follows it along the product.
Material transition
The junction between two materials — usually the most looked-at detail on a mixed-material piece.
Upholstery execution
Where the product is covered, how the material is worked over the form rather than which material it is.
Timber & veneer appearance
Where applicable, how grain and colour behave across the components of one product.
Metal, stone & glass
Where applicable, how a hard material sits against a soft one, and how the two are finished to agree.
Materials and finishes are specified for the programme and confirmed physically. No colour tolerance, gloss value, hardness, abrasion figure or test standard is published here — those are programme specifications and, where a market requires them, laboratory matters.
07Function
A mechanism can be specified. It cannot be assessed until it is used.
Where a product moves, the physical piece is where the movement is first operated by hand — at the real size, with the real weight, on the real hardware.
Where this applies
Extension tables
How the mechanism operates, how the leaf sits when it is in, and what the top does across the join.
Storage and lift-up beds
How the base is raised and lowered, and how access works from beside the bed rather than in section.
Swivel and rocking seating
How the movement feels at the seat, and how the chair behaves as somebody gets into and out of it.
Doors and drawers
How fronts travel, and whether they return to the same line after they have been opened.
Assessment is not testing
Operating a mechanism on a prototype establishes that it works as intended on that piece. It is not a measure of service life, and nothing here claims one. Where a destination market or programme requires formal testing, relevant product and material testing can be arranged through external laboratories.
08Comfort
Where a product has a comfort requirement, it has to be sat in.
On upholstered seating, comfort is among the characteristics a specification conveys least directly — not because the specification is vague, but because the answer is one people arrive at by sitting down.
Specification level
Programmes run from entry-level to very premium. Where one sits is a commercial decision taken with the buyer.
When it is agreed
Comfort and construction requirements are agreed as part of the quotation and order process rather than settled afterwards.
How it is confirmed
Physically, on the piece, by the people whose programme it is.
Applies where the product has a comfort requirement — upholstered seating in particular. Furniship does not publish a single comfort standard, and no foam, firmness or seat-height figure appears on this site, because a target that suited every programme would suit none of them.
The point of finding it here is that it is still cheap to change.

Changes can be agreed after reviewing a physical prototype. Further prototype or sample rounds can be produced where the programme requires them. The number of rounds is programme-dependent.
Which of these a given prototype addresses depends on the product and on how much of it is still open — the list is what a physical piece can surface, not a set of items every round works through. How many rounds a programme runs is decided by the programme rather than by a standard.

Prototyping defines. Quality control compares.
Once the physical product and the specification that accompanies it are agreed as the reference for the programme, production has something to be assessed against. That is the point the two disciplines meet, and they meet once.

The approved piece becomes the production standard
Where a physical sample has been approved, production is held against it, and it is retained for reorders.
Timing is not universal
Prototype and sample timing depends on the category, the construction and the programme, and is confirmed per programme.
Not every programme uses every reference, and the approved physical piece is one part of the agreed reference rather than the whole of it. How production is then checked against it belongs to the quality control page.

13Boundaries
What a prototype is not.
Three things sit next to prototyping and are often confused with it. Each is useful, and each answers a question this does not.
Not a render
A visual representation settles how a product looks in an image and is genuinely useful for that. It is not physical validation, and it cannot be sat in, operated or handled.
Not laboratory certification
Assessing a mechanism by using it is not a measure of service life. Where a market or programme requires formal testing, relevant product and material testing can be arranged through external laboratories.
Not production quality control
Quality control verifies that production conforms to the agreed reference. Prototyping helps establish what that reference is.

What buyers ask about prototyping
- Can Furniship make a physical prototype before production?
- Yes. Physical samples are produced across supported categories, and the piece is assessed before a production quantity is committed. What the physical piece is for depends on the programme and the category.
- Can we inspect it before approving production?
- Yes. A physical sample can be inspected at source or shipped to the customer before production.
- Can you ship the prototype to us?
- Yes. Across supported categories, a sample can be shipped to the customer to be assessed in their own hands before production.
- How long does a prototype take?
- Prototype and sample timing depends on the category, the construction and the programme, and is confirmed per programme. Furniship does not publish a single lead time across categories, because one figure would not hold for a dining chair and an upholstered sofa alike.
- Can we change the product after seeing the prototype?
- Yes. Changes can be agreed after reviewing the physical prototype, and further prototype or sample rounds can be produced where the programme requires them. The number of rounds depends on the programme.
- Does the prototype become the quality control standard?
- Where a physical sample has been approved, it becomes the production standard and is retained for reorders. It forms part of the agreed reference for the programme rather than the whole of it — the specification, a technical drawing where there is one, and the agreed material, finish, labelling and packaging requirements are part of the same reference.
- Do you prototype our own design?
- A defined design or specification runs as an OEM programme, where the physical piece is proof of what that definition becomes before production. An earlier-stage idea, reference or requirement runs as a custom programme, where the physical piece is part of deciding what the product should be.
- Can Furniship prototype its own collection products with our changes?
- Yes. Starting from a Furniship-developed product is a private label or ODM programme, and the adapted product is sampled before production. Starting there does not limit how far the product can move.
- Does prototyping include laboratory testing?
- No — assessing a product physically is not the same as testing it. Where the destination market or programme requires it, relevant product and material testing can be arranged through external laboratories.
- What is the minimum order quantity?
- MOQs are set around the product and programme rather than one fixed threshold. They vary with construction, materials and the requirements of the programme itself.
