01The range

Dining chairs Furniship builds.

A dining chair programme is usually a decision about construction before it is a decision about shape — which is why the range publishes by construction rather than by silhouette.
  • Upholstered

    Seat and back covered over a frame. The construction where comfort and cover execution decide perceived quality.

  • Timber frame

    Solid wood structure, exposed. Joinery and finish are the product, because nothing covers them.

  • Metal frame

    Section, weld and coating. A different industry from timber, with different failure modes and a different finish problem.

  • Mixed material

    Timber and metal, or frame and upholstery, meeting at an interface that has to be resolved rather than assumed.

  • With arms

    Arms change the width, the table clearance and the load path into the back.

  • Armless

    The volume format in most dining assortments, and the one that has to stack or nest well.

Stackable formats are built where the product is designed to stack, and construction is not limited to the six above. Formats, dimensions, constructions, materials and finishes are developed around the requirements of the programme. The formats shown are examples of the range, not its limit.

Why a simple chair is not simple

Six decisions, none of which the customer can see being made.

A dining chair is a small structure carrying a moving load at an awkward height. Almost every part of it is visible, so there is nowhere to absorb an error — and the parts that fail are rarely the parts that look like they might.

    Frame geometry

    The angles between seat, back and legs set both the comfort and the load path. Change one and the other two move with it.

    Joints & fixings

    Where the chair loosens first. A dining chair is loaded, dragged and leaned back on, mostly at the same three junctions.

    What carries the weight — a solid panel, a webbed frame, a formed shell. It decides both comfort and how the seat ages.

03Fit

A dining chair has to fit a person and a table at the same time.

Almost every dimension on a dining chair is a compromise between the body and the furniture around it. There is no correct value — there is a target, and it comes from the assortment the chair is going into.

    Raise it for the table and the legs suffer; lower it and the table becomes a shelf.

    Deeper supports the thigh and pushes the back further from where it should be.

    A dining chair is not a lounge chair, and a back that recliners is a chair people leave the table in.

  • Arm heightTable apron clearance

    Arms that clear the apron may sit too low for the elbow, and arms that suit the elbow may not go under the table.

    The chair is being bought in multiples, so width is a seating-count decision, not only a comfort one.

  • FootprintSpacing around the table

    Leg splay and the space a chair takes when pushed in decide how many sit comfortably around a given table, and constrain the leg geometry before anything else does.

Which way each of these resolves is set by the specification, per programme. This section names the decisions rather than prescribing values — the right seat height for a contract dining programme is not the right seat height for a retail one.

04Material

Each material asks the factory for something different.

Choosing between timber, metal and upholstery is not a styling decision with a cost attached. Each one changes which production skills matter, and which failure the programme has to be watched for.

    Species, cut and finish, with the joinery on show. Movement, grain and colour vary between boards before anything is made from them.

Where two materials meet — a timber seat on a metal frame, an upholstered pad in a wooden surround — the interface is its own problem: fixings, tolerance and colour relationship all have to be resolved rather than assumed.

05Six at a time

Dining chairs are rarely judged one at a time.

A dining chair is judged against five identical chairs standing next to it, in the same light, at the same height. Variation becomes immediately visible when identical chairs sit side by side.

Timber, coating and cover consistent between batches, not only within them.

Hardware, fit and finish the same in the last carton as in the first.

Production is held against the approved sample rather than against a drawing, and the sample is retained for reorders — which is what makes the second order look like the first.

06Production

Components before structure, structure before surface.

A chair is made from small parts that must fit each other before anything is finished — which is why the sequence matters more than it does on a larger product with more tolerance in it.

    Material preparation

    Timber selected and conditioned, or metal section cut and prepared. Colour and grain sorted before parts are made, because they cannot be sorted afterwards.

  2. 02

    Component production

    Legs, rails, backs and seat parts produced to the approved standard. Consistency here is what makes assembly possible.

  3. 03

    Frame & joinery

    The structure assembled and squared. The point after which geometry cannot be corrected.

  4. 04

    Finish & upholstery

    Surface finish applied, or seat and back upholstered. The stage that decides what the customer sees and touches.

  5. 05

    Assembly

    Components brought together, hardware fitted, the chair checked as a whole rather than as parts.

  6. 06

    Inspection & packing

    Checked against the approved sample and packed for the way it will actually travel.

Where the customer asks for it, Furniship takes full responsibility for the quality-control programme on the order — incoming materials, in-line checks, dimensions and construction, appearance and finish, packaging, labels and final pre-shipment inspection, with photographic reporting.

07Packing & transport

A chair is mostly air too — just less of it.

Chairs ship in quantity, which makes carton design a commercial decision rather than a finishing task. What works depends on the chair; none of it is universal.

Assembled or knock-down
Some chairs ship built and some ship flat. Knock-down buys cube and costs assembly at the other end — a trade, decided per programme.
Stacking & nesting
Where the geometry allows it, stacking changes the cube materially. It also constrains the leg and back design that make it possible, so it is decided during development, not after.
Surface & upholstery protection
A finished chair is a finished surface on every face. Protection has to reach the parts that rub against each other in transit.
Carton design
Engineered to the chair and to how many travel together, rather than to a standard box size.

09Buyer questions

What dining chair buyers ask

Can the dimensions change?
Yes. Seat height, depth, width, back height and overall proportions can all be adapted, on a Furniship-developed chair or on your own design. Starting from a Furniship chair does not limit how far it can move.
Can materials and finishes change?
Yes. Timber species and finish, metal section and coating, and cover material are set per programme. Where two materials meet, the interface is resolved as part of development rather than assumed.
Which constructions do you build?
Timber, metal, upholstered and mixed-material chairs, with arms or armless, and stackable formats where the product is designed to stack. Those are examples rather than the limit — construction is developed around the requirements of the programme, subject to development, quotation and technical feasibility.
Can I supply my own specification?
Yes. A defined design or drawing runs as an OEM programme: engineered for production, sampled, and manufactured against the approved sample.
Can samples be shipped to us?
Yes. A physical sample can be inspected at source or shipped to the customer before production, and the approved piece becomes the production standard. Timing depends on the product and construction and is confirmed per programme.
What is the minimum order quantity?
MOQs are set around the product and programme rather than one fixed threshold. They vary with construction, materials and the requirements of the programme itself.
Can testing be arranged?
Yes. Relevant product and material testing can be arranged through external laboratories where the destination market or programme requires it.
