A coffee table has very little to hide behind. It sits low, in the middle of the room, and it is looked down on — so the proportions, the edges and the way the materials meet are not details of the design. They are most of it.

Rectangular
The volume format in most living-room assortments, and the one where the top is longest and least supported.
Square
A single format that reads as a centrepiece rather than as a line in front of a sofa.
Round
No corners to protect and nothing to align to. The base becomes the whole structural question.
Oval
A rectangular footprint with a continuous edge, which is a different edge problem rather than a softer one.
Nesting sets
Two or three tables that have to work apart, together and stacked — three conditions, one construction.
Pedestal base
Everything carried through one point. It buys floor space and spends stability, and on a low table that trade is felt.
Frame base
Structure that is meant to be seen. The section, the joint and the finish are the design rather than the support for it.
Storage-integrated
A drawer, a shelf or a compartment turns one surface into two and adds a moving part to a static product.
Sculptural and base-led forms are developed the same way, and construction is not limited to the eight above. Formats, dimensions, constructions, materials and finishes are developed around the requirements of the programme. The formats shown are examples of the range, not its limit.

The loudest decision on a coffee table. It changes the material, the support the top needs, the shipping weight, the edge and the cost — and it is legible from every seat in the room.

Stability and legroom
Pull the base inward and the table gains legroom and spends stability; push it outward and it does the reverse. At this height both are noticed immediately.
None of these is published here as a value, deliberately. The target comes from the assortment: a coffee table for a deep lounge sofa and a coffee table for a compact apartment range are not the same product with different numbers on it.
On a coffee table, the material is most of the product.
Solid timber
A surface with its own figure and its own movement. Boards are selected and matched before anything is cut, because grain and colour across a wide top cannot be corrected afterwards.

A stable substrate with a controlled face. It makes large flat tops and repeatable colour possible, and it moves the difficulty to the edge, where the construction becomes visible.

Metal
Section, weld and coating — a different industry from timber with different failure modes. Most often the base, sometimes the frame, occasionally the top.

Stone
A surface with pattern that cannot be specified the way a colour can, on a top heavy enough to change everything under and around it.

Glass
Where the programme calls for it. A glass top makes the base part of the visible product, because there is nothing above it to look at instead.

Mixed material
Timber on metal, stone on timber, one material meeting another at a line the customer will look straight at. The interface is a decision in its own right, not the consequence of two others.

Material is decided with the programme rather than offered from a list. What suits a given table depends on the format, the top size, the price the programme has to hit and the market it ships to — and it is resolved during development, subject to quotation and technical feasibility.

What the top decides
Thickness
Sets the material, what the top can span unsupported, the shipping weight and the visual weight — four consequences from one number on a drawing.
Edge detail
Where the top's construction becomes visible, and the part that gets knocked. Appearance and durability are the same decision here.
Inset or flush
Whether the top sits on the base, into it or over it. It changes the shadow line, which is the first thing the eye reads.
Where they meet
Fixing visibility
Whether the fixing is hidden, deliberately shown or simply present. Hidden costs construction; shown has to be worth showing.
Material transition
Where two materials meet, one of them is always harder to hold to tolerance. Which one gives is decided in development, not on the line.

Geometry
Where the support sits under the top, and therefore what the top has to do between supports and what the room has to walk around.
Floor contact
A coffee table is pushed rather than lifted. What meets the floor decides whether it marks a floor and whether it stays where it was put.
None of this is unusual engineering. It is the ordinary work of a category where nothing is hidden — which is why it is specified rather than assumed.
05Close range
The one piece of furniture people look down on.
A sofa is judged from across a room and a dining table from standing height. A coffee table is judged from a metre away, from above, in whatever light the room happens to have — which is the least forgiving way anything in the assortment gets looked at.
Colour & finish consistency
Across the top, between top and base, and between one batch and the next.
Edge finish
The line the hand finds and the eye follows. It is finished to the same standard as the face, because it is seen as often.
Grain & veneer direction
Set before anything is cut. On a wide top it is a permanent decision about how the surface reads.
Metal coating
Colour, sheen and coverage on sections that are close to the floor, close to the eye and frequently touched.
Stone appearance
Pattern is a property of the material, not a specification. What is agreed is the range that will be accepted.
Material junctions
Where two materials meet, the line between them is judged before either surface is.
No visual tolerance is published here. Appearance is agreed per programme against an approved physical sample, and production is held against that sample rather than against a written percentage.

Not every table works this way, and none of it is a substitute for an assortment plan. It is raised here because it is cheapest to act on early: the decisions that make a family possible are taken while the first table is being engineered, not after it has been approved.

The most damageable thing in the carton is the part everyone looks at.
A coffee table top is large, flat, finished on the face the customer will judge it by, and it travels next to other large flat things. How it ships is decided while it is being engineered, because assembly method and construction are the same decision.
Surface protection
The finished face travels against something. What that something is, and how it is fixed, decides whether the surface arrives as it left.
Edge & corner protection
Corners take impact and edges take abrasion. They are protected differently because they fail differently — and on a stone or glass top the corner is the whole risk.
Top and base separated
Where the programme ships apart, the two travel in different conditions and are protected on different terms.
Assembled or knock-down
A trade between cube and what happens at the other end. It is a decision about the customer's warehouse and the customer's customer, not only about freight.
Hardware & instructions
Fixings packed so nothing is loose against a finished surface, with an instruction written for someone who has never seen the product.

What coffee table buyers ask
- Can the dimensions change?
- Yes. Length, width, height, top thickness and base position can all be adapted, on a Furniship-developed table or on your own design. Dimensions change what the base has to do, so they are agreed as part of engineering rather than applied afterwards.
- Can materials be combined?
- Yes. Timber on metal, stone on timber and other combinations are developed per programme. Where two materials meet, the junction and the tolerance between them are resolved during development rather than assumed.
- Can we change the base?
- Yes. Base construction is a programme decision, and on a coffee table it is often the decision that separates two price positions built on the same top.
- Can we create a nesting set?
- Yes, where the construction allows it. Nesting has to be engineered from the first drawing rather than derived afterwards, because the tables have to work apart, together and stacked.
- Can Furniship manufacture our design?
- Yes. A defined design or drawing runs as an OEM programme: engineered for production, sampled, and manufactured against the approved sample.
- Can samples be inspected or shipped to us?
- Yes. A physical sample can be inspected at source or shipped to the customer before production, and the approved piece becomes the production standard. Timing depends on the product and construction and is confirmed per programme.
- What is the minimum order quantity?
- MOQs are set around the product and programme rather than one fixed threshold. They vary with construction, materials and the requirements of the programme itself.
- Can packaging be customised?
- Yes. Packaging, labelling and branding are set per programme, and on this category the protection specification is part of the product decision rather than a later addition.
- Can testing be arranged?
- Yes. Relevant product and material testing can be arranged through external laboratories where the destination market or programme requires it.
